Root to Rise: A Daoist Flow Spring Equinox Daylong Retreat

with Mimi Kuo-Deemer and Jean Hall

“There is symbolic as well as actual beauty in the migration of the birds, the ebb and flow of the tides, the folded bud ready for the spring. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature - the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after the winter.”
― Rachel Carson

In the spring, as the light returns and signs of new growth manifest, we may emerge from the depths of hibernation, ready to climb upwards to meet life with renewed intention and vigour.  In the words of Leo Tolstoy, ‘Spring is the time of projects and plans’.

While Spring’s strong, rising, yang energy can be invigorating and inspiring, it can also be challenging and unexpectedly tricky. It is a contrary time of year, where a spell of sunny, warm days are followed by sudden blasts of Arctic-like air and showers.  Like a tree that is flexible yet firmly rooted to the steadiness of the earth, we can learn to harness spring’s unpredictable energy by staying anchored and grounded, firm yet flexible and invigorated by nature’s fluctuations.  Like many highly resourceful trees that are shaped by the winds and can grow around obstacles in their path, we too can relearn to align with the energy of spring and rediscover our capacity for patience and adaptability as we bridge the forces of change.

Through a combination of somatic movement patterns, vinyasa yoga, qigong and personal enquiries, this daylong retreat will explore ways to harmonise with and embrace the uplifting energy of spring. By learning how to root, we can awaken our capacity to rise with a renewed sense of inner steadiness, resourcefulness, flexibility and purpose.

In this retreat, we will explore:
  • The breath’s cycle of renewal and release, expansion and condension, rise and fall.
  • The principle of yielding into the earth to provide an upward rebound and reach into space.
  • An understanding of the tendons and ligaments in the body, and how they relate to creating flexibility, mobility, resilience and strength.
  • Qigong practices for the liver and gall bladder – organs that associate in Chinese medicine with rhythm, dreams, visions, and plans.
  • Reflections on the Wood Phase/Element, which is associated with spring in the qigong, Daoism and Chinese medicine.

Open to all levels of practitioners.

About Daoist Flow:
Daoist Flow explores the interconnectedness of yoga, qigong, somatics and natural movement with the underlying intention to touch in on our innate qualities of compassion and inner joy. It begins from the idea that everything is part of the whole, a belief found within both Yoga and Daoist traditions. Aligning with this wholeness enables us to discover our full potential and inherent wisdom, fluidity and ease within ourselves.

About Jean and Mimi:
Mimi and Jean are senior teachers at triyoga, and the co-founders of the Daoist Flow Yoga teacher training programme. Prior to the start of Daoist Flow, they taught on triyoga’s Level One teacher training course since 2011. Together they have a combined experience of over 40 years of practising and teaching yoga, meditation and other movement arts such as qigong, somatics and dance.
