Though no women in Wangden village are permitted to weave Wangden style rugs, many such as Pema continue to play important roles in the production of these traditional carpets by spooling and darning the wool used in weaving. The local supserstition holds that only men may weave Wangden rugs, believed to be holy and used by many high lamas, and any woman who attempts to learn the craft will lose her life.
