“ I was born with the knowledge that I am a nun.” –Tshering
Bum, 40, monastic prefect, Zilukha nunnery, Thimpu.'
Tshering
Bum started wearning the robes of a nun when she as nine, with the consent
of her parents, and practiced her dharmic studies at home. At the age
of 28, she joined the Zilukha nunnery in Thimpu.
In her role as monastic prefect, disciplining the young nuns is a must,
but Tshering Bum feels that criticism and harsh words used on anyone
can be challenging. “I don’t want to discipline anyone,”
she confessed, “but if I want to support the Buddhist dharma and
bring young nuns on the right path, I have this role to play. Young
nuns will have their own contributions to make in spirituality: peace,
love, and compassion.”
